About this volume

The island never quite went back to normal after the Preserve.

Arclight tried. Classes resumed. Security doubled and pretended it hadn't. The festival banners went up on schedule and the tournament arrived with the noise and spectacle it always brought — foreign schools, political entourages, and crowds that descended on Valecis Isle like they hadn't just watched footage of a skull-masked mercenary carry a child through smoke and ruin on every feed in the Upper Planes.

Cale kept his head down.

That lasted about as long as it usually lasted.

There are people watching him on campus who have no business watching him. An old ally shows up at Gran's kitchen table with a favor that is not going to be a small one. The Veskari thread that started in the Preserve is pulling toward something nobody has a clean answer for yet. And the tournament is bringing everyone to the same island at the same time — the people Cale needs to stay away from, the people who are already asking the wrong questions, and the people he did not expect to see at all.

Then Aiden asks the favor.

And everything that comes after it happens at the Gala.

Volume Three. Chapters 54 through 83.
